Study of science — rather physics — has generated by now a large number of theories, laws and experimental results of the physical world from microworld to macroworld through the ordinary world — the world of senses. There are, however, deeper significance behind all such knowledges required to be strictly analysed through the grammer of philosophy and not by common-sense-type philosophy. Such analysis forms what is called Philosophy of Science or Metaphysics. Herein lies the need of two distinct disciplines — Physics and Metaphysics.
- Has the Mind-Body Problem Advanced Over the Years?

The age-old Mind-Body problem is of great interest even today botti to science and philosophy. Progress in neuroscience has been rerrtarkable. We have a detailed knowledge on how the brain works. But whether philosophy of mind too has advanced correspondingly is a moot question. Also important is the question whether we are asking the right questions on the Mind-Body problem. After surveying the field briefly we conclude that in spite of the ongoing research in the philosophy of mind, with the introduction of many interesting models and theories, the basic question of consciousness and subjectivity have not been solved. This agrees with our view that the primary role of philosophy is not to give definitive answers but to clarify the questions and examine if they are answerable in the conceptual framework used. We also comment on Wittgenstein's views on the nature of philosophy. Keywords

Manage k Trois, however interesting and exciting it may seem, has serious drawbacks. It is rarely successful or satisfactory to all concerned. The three disciplines : physics, mathematics and philosophy — all including or based on logic — have their separate jurisdictions, aims and methods. While the first two are generally unequivocal and to a great extent uncontroversial in their utterances, philosophers may differ greatly among themselves when discussing the same subject, for instance, about the existence of physical and matheniatical entities (ontology) or the manner in which we come to know about the external world (epistemology), with nobody being proved right or wrong in the end. Not with standing this well known feature about the three enterprises, and the fact that cross-fertilization of ideas from different disciplines can be very fruitful, we should guard against pitfalls when treading border areas. A few examples of such pitfalls and resulting confusion are discussed in this article. Keywords

1905 is one of the foremost, remarkable years though few in the history of Physics. In the course of the year 1905, a series of papers were published by Albert Einstein (1879-1955), a 26-year old clerk at the Swiss Patent Office doing physics parttime, and they changed our view of the world completely No other comparably fertile period of indiuidual scientific accomplishmerM can be found except during 1665 and J 666, the original annus mirabilis, when Isaac Newton started to lay the basis for the calculus his law of gravitation, and his theory of colours. The international physics community has set aside the year 2005 as the World Year of Physics as a tribute to Einstein's centennial (1). After Einstein's discoveries, space and time acquired a new meaning. Separation of space and time was not possible in'an absolute sense. They depended on the choice of coordinate system. We had to get used to the concept of spacetime (first introduced by H. Minkowski). The mass of a body was a measure of its energy content, the velocity of light could not be exceeded anywhere and it was the same for all observers. The Special theory of Relativity came to occupy an unshakeable position in the field of physics. Absolute space, absolute time, a luminiferous ether were all discarded. Keywords

Starting with Einstein's General Theory of Relativity (1915) and the ever growing accumulation of astronomical data from land based and orbiting telescopes, our understanding of the universe has vastly advanced. Yet the fundamental philosophical questions of cosmology remain unanswered, Are space and time finite of infinite? Has the universe a beginning and an end? Is there a purpose, design of meaning in the scheme of things. (teleology)?
Recent observation of very remote galaxies into 12 billion tight years away, and the current estimate that the universe contains over 100 billion gataxies, each with many billions of stars, present us a picture impossible to visualize and reminds us of the limits of human cognitive power. Philosophy though not advancing in the sense of scientific cosmology, can here tay bare the source of the mystery and cure our disquiet reminding us of Wittgenstein'’s staternent about the therapeutic use of philasophy. Philasophy according to Wittgenstein is wholly distinet from science, philosophy orily clarifies questions and does not contribute to the advance of a science like astronomy of cosmology.
